“Malaysia is a country of shadows, light and the reflections of both. Here the past mingles with the present, and ancient traditions blend with modern influences, creating a place of deep mystery and endless fascination.”

– Anthony Burgess

A melting pot of cultures, dense rainforests, orangutans, great diving and killer street food… Welcome to Malaysia!

Malaysia is split between two very different regions: Peninsular Malaysia, which lies on the Malay Peninsula, and East Malaysia, located on the island of Borneo. The former is about cultural diversity – a melting pot of cultures, where Malay, Chinese, Indian, and indigenous communities coexist harmoniously. Major attractions include bustling modern cities like Kuala Lumpur, and old heritage cities like Penang, the “Pearl of the Orient and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Don’t forget vast tea plantations and tropical beaches to relax after all the big cities.

East Malaysia is in contrast all about wildlife, with some of the world’s oldest rainforests, incredible National Parks and Mount Kinabalu, the tallest peak in Southeast Asia. Biodiversity is amazingly rich here, boasting some big hits like orangutans and pygmy elephants. Malaysian cuisine is a reflection of its cultural diversity and is going strong in all parts of the country. Each region has its must-try dishes, the most famous ones being Nasi Lemak (also considered Malaysia’s national dish) and different versions of tasty Laksa, my favorite.
